Established in 1921, Dhaka University introduced tutoring services through the halls of residence after the teaching model of Oxford University. Over time, DU got touted as the Oxford of the East. In the last 100 years, the university has grown in reputation as it has produced graduates who have contributed not only to the nation but also to the world as statesmen, scientists, political leaders, academics and researchers, Nobel laureates, entrepreneurs and administrators.
There are 83 academic departments under 13 faculties and another 13 research institutes from which you can choose the subject you are interested. Most of the teaching staff of Dhaka University have had their further studies in OECD countries. Students benefit from the overseas exposures of their teachers to the best practices and innovative research of the OECD countries.
The university’s inclusive policy allows overseas students a fast-track entry, unavailable to local students. In 2023, a total of 272,512 admission-seekers applied against 7,128 seats for admission into the university. Only one out of 38 candidates would make it to DU. But if you are an international student, your admission is processed by the department concerned, and you have a higher chance of being a proud member of the DU fraternity.
