Message from the Vice Chancellor

University of Dhaka

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the University of Dhaka, a century-old institution that grew under three political flags and played a decisive role in forging a national identity. The university’s inception in 1921 in colonial Britain, its coming-of-age following the Partition in 1947, and its contribution to the making of a new nation through an armed struggle contribute to its chequered history. Today, we look back on our strong heritage of academic excellence and cultural tradition to continue to build on our past accomplishments and become the university of the future.

In a globally connected world, opportunities for international education are being redefined. Now more than ever, we need to share our resources to make the world sustainable. The government provides funding for Dhaka University because it is a public institution. The cost of education is kept to a minimum as our government gives utmost priority to the quality of education, inclusivity, and growth through partnership. Dhaka University is a platform for the meeting of great minds, academic scholars, and impactful researchers. We welcome foreign students to benefit from well-designed education programmes and research initiatives. I believe that it is only through intercultural exchanges that we learn to respect one another as citizens of the world.

The degree-offering entities of the university are specifically designed to meet the needs of students from a variety of language levels and backgrounds. Our generous financial assistance scheme available under the Bangabandhu Overseas Scholarships and the SAARC tuition waivers, as well as the subsidised tuition fees, can make the University of Dhaka an attractive destination for students who would have otherwise been deprived of higher education due to financial constraints.

The vibrant city life of Dhaka will make your experience at DU both memorable and invaluable. I believe that you will take the opportunity to be at the heart of Dhaka and feel the heartbeats of all those proud alumni who have grown with us over the years.

Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan, PhD
