The University of Dhaka is one of the oldest institutions in the subcontinent. Over the last one hundred years of its existence, it has grown in reputation not only as an academic seat of learning par excellence but also as a furnace of our national consciousness.
Spread over a land area of 600 acres in the heart of the city of Dhaka, the university shares its colonial legacy and cultural heritage. There are about 38,000 students studying in its 38 academic departments and 13 research institutes under 13 faculties. There are more than 56 research centres that pursue collaborative and innovative research at both local and national levels. Two-thirds of its faculty members have received their higher degrees or training abroad. The international orientation of the university makes it a desired destination for international students.
The University has ranked first in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact ranking among all Bangladeshi Universities in the 401–600 band (2022). It features in the 601–800 band of the World University Rankings (2023) and the 251-300 band of the Asia University Rankings (2022). In the Social Sciences and Management broad category, Dhaka University is the only university to have made the rankings from Bangladesh. DU ranked in the 451–500 bracket in the world in the 2023 QS Social Sciences & Management broad category.
This is steady growth from our previous year’s performance. DU has adopted a strategic framework to comply with the requirements and benchmarks of the ranking agencies and demonstrate its commitments to the UN SDGs as well as its preparedness for the challenges posed by the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
